Dustyesky - концерт в Opera House

Opera House.

Article for Unification, ‘Edinenie’

Dustyesky is forever grateful to Russian people all over Australia and the world.  Without you we would not be performing at the Sydney Opera House.  It is an incredible privilege to be doing this and testimony to the enduring power and wonder of the magnificent Russian songs that we sing.  Spasibo Bolshoi!  We look forward to seeing many of our Russian friends in Sydney and hope we can share a tea together from the Opera House samovar or maybe even a vodka - or possibly one of our famous gherkin liqueurs.  ‘Why nyet?’

Dustyesky has a confession to make to Russians everywhere.  When we first went to sing for a Russian audience for the first time in mid-2017, at the Community Centre in Brisbane, we were, despite being strong and hairy, wise and handsome men - in a word - terrified.  You see, we had listened with love to the great performances of the Red Army Choir, of Ivan Rebrov, Vladimir Albatayev and others.  The tradition is so rich and magnificent, how could we meet the high standards of a Russian audience?  Somehow, we did.  What a gift we were given by you.

Of course, the warmth and enthusiasm of Russians for Dustyesky is now a wonderful part of our history.  Perhaps it is the undeclared fuel of our unlikely odyssey, which has taken us all over Australia and around the world online.  The simple truth is that our repertoire - from The Song of the Volga Boatmen to Sviatye Bozhe - is quintessentially Russian but is the music of the soul of the world.  This is the paradox of Dustyesky – it is uniquely Russian but speaks to everyone.  In our times, ‘cultural appropriation’ is a problem for many but Dustyesky seems charmed.  Thanks to the response of Russian people.

The first article about Dustyesky published in ‘Edinenie’ - thanks to Vladimir Kouzmin and Constanin Drozdovskii – changed our lives.  We are so thankful that we met and you have supported us so many.  We will be thinking of you when we are standing on the stage in the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House, singing these magnificent songs.  We shall raise a glass – maybe more than one - to the composers and singers, the superb tradition of the culture that has made Dustyesky possible.

Davai!
Mark Swivel
