Australia, frankly, is not the most popular place for winter sports. Nevertheless, there are a significant number of good ski slopes in the Snowy Mountains region, and there are artificial ice rinks in every large city. Therefore, the team has been participating in the Winter Olympics since 1936, although not as successfully as in the summer games. The Australians were able to win the first medal, bronze in speed skating, at the Winter Olympics only in 1994, and the Australians won their first gold in 2002.
